Fibre to the premises uses a NBN Modem on the wall which is the only point you will need to directly connect to your personal computer, phone landline or hard-wired via Ethernet Cable. This can lead to significant disadvantages if the internal wall is located in the kitchen, main living room or a kids room. As these places or not the most suitable location for a NBN Modem.
Changing the default location the NBN Technician will want to install is not generally covered in the Free NBN Connection Service. So you will want to be aware where your current copper phone line meets the house and inspect the room that is behind this wall.
NBN Back To Base Security Alarm Systems And Medical Diallers
When your home or business has a Back To Base Security Alarm System or/and a Medical Dialler, it will require either re-wiring or smart wiring system to connect to the NBN. When connecting to the NBN it is necessary to have an available phone point and a backup power supply in case of power outages.
This is less of an issue for the Fibre To The Premises connection as a separate Landline Phone connection can be requested. The NBN Technician will then install. the NBN Modem with two NBN Phone Points and a backup power supply. One of the NBN phone lines can then be connected back into your home’s current pone wiring and turn it into a NBN Phone line.
It is important to note that a lot of security systems and medical diallers were designed as analogue based systems. The system may still work through the modem but it is advised to ask your service provider to ensure that it will.
When using the Fibre To The Node connection it is important to know that phone points will not work if any other service provided other than Telstra will not work as they are only provided to Telstra customers. You will need to use the supplied Modem from your service provider to use the NBN Phone Line.
When deciding a NBN Service Provider it is best to ask if they will supply a modem backup power supply. In a power outage Back To Base and medical diallers will fail to connect if no backup power supply is present.
